Fenerbahçe vs Liverpool: Kuyt faces his former club with two points and a defensive problem
The interim coach takes charge of Fenerbahçe for his first European night against a Liverpool side with three Champions League wins, seven goals conceded and a recent home defeat to Arsenal.

Dirk Kuyt's history runs through both clubs, but Wednesday's reunion is about what his new side can do now. Fenerbahçe have yet to win in the league phase and surrendered a two-goal lead to Slavia Praha. Liverpool have all nine points on offer; the 12 goals they have scored in Europe have come with seven conceded. Istanbul gives Kuyt an immediate chance to test whether his team can sustain its stronger spells against a prolific opponent.

- Competition: 2026/27 UEFA Champions League, league phase Matchday 4.
- Fixture: Fenerbahçe at home to Liverpool.
- Kick-off: Wednesday 4 November, 17:45 UTC; 20:45 TRT in Istanbul.

A new coach and two leads that got away
Fenerbahçe drew 1-1 with Roma, lost 6-0 at Aston Villa and drew 2-2 with Slavia Praha in their first three league-phase matches, leaving them on two points with a minus-six goal difference. Oğuz Aydın and Mason Greenwood had put them 2-0 up against Slavia before the visitors recovered. UEFA says the result extended Fenerbahçe's winless run in the main Champions League competition to nine matches. Kuyt, once a Liverpool forward and later a Fenerbahçe player, took interim charge on 28 October after İsmail Kartal resigned.
The next domestic match brought a similar reversal. Matteo Guendouzi gave Fenerbahçe the lead against Göztepe shortly before half-time on 31 October, but two second-half goals produced a 2-1 home defeat. The Turkish federation's match sheet lists Ederson, N'Golo Kanté, Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Oğuz Aydın and Romelu Lukaku as starters. That establishes their involvement against Göztepe, not their availability against Liverpool.
Liverpool's European results tell the opposite story. Andoni Iraola's side beat Atlético de Madrid 2-1, LASK 6-3 away and Villarreal 4-3. Bradley Barcola scored three at LASK; Alexis Mac Allister scored twice against Villarreal. The goals have come from different positions, but the back line has allowed three in each of the last two Champions League fixtures. Domestic momentum also stalled on Sunday: Arsenal won 1-0 at Anfield after Liverpool had beaten Brighton 2-0 and Chelsea on penalties in the League Cup. Iraola said his team started poorly against Arsenal and then failed to finish promising attacks. Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar.
Availability: recent returns do not settle Wednesday's team sheets
Liverpool
The club's injury list, updated on 27 October, and its pre-Arsenal update on 1 November set out the following situations. A final squad for Istanbul had not been announced at the time of this preview:
- Jeremie Frimpong: recently out with a muscle injury; a return for this match has not been confirmed.
- Conor Bradley: recovering from a long-term knee injury; he had not returned before Arsenal.
- Hugo Ekitiké: recovering from a long-term Achilles injury; he had not returned before Arsenal.
- Giovanni Leoni: recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury; he had not returned before Arsenal.
- Dominik Szoboszlai and Víctor Muñoz: returned to the squad after injury and appeared as substitutes against Arsenal, according to Iraola. Their appearance on Sunday does not establish a starting role on Wednesday.
Fenerbahçe
The club had not published a match-specific medical update or its European match squad. The official Göztepe line-up shows Romelu Lukaku back in the starting side after coming on against Slavia; N'Golo Kanté and Oğuz Aydın also started on 31 October. That does not confirm any of them for Liverpool. Further absences or returns remain unconfirmed until the club reports them.
Where the contest could turn
Kanté and Guendouzi form the most obvious barrier to Mac Allister and Wirtz receiving cleanly between midfield and attack. If Liverpool play through that first pressure, Isak, Barcola and Gakpo give them several routes into the area. On the flanks, Oğuz and Kerem featured in Fenerbahçe's latest league starting XI, while Liverpool's wide threat must be weighed against the recent absences of full-backs Frimpong and Bradley. Those are potential match-ups, not a claimed team sheet.
There is also the question of how long Fenerbahçe can protect an advantage. They led Slavia 2-0 and Göztepe 1-0 without winning either game. Liverpool have scored 12 and conceded seven across three European nights. If chances come at both ends again, Kuyt's side will need more control after taking the lead than it has shown in those two fixtures. UEFA records this as the clubs' first official meeting.
