Bucks at Celtics: Milwaukee’s defence faces a test after a 1-6 start

Both teams arrive at TD Garden after Monday defeats, but the damage looks different. Boston’s five-game winning streak ended in a 109-93 loss at Houston; Milwaukee fell 112-100 at Minnesota and has won only one of its first seven games. The Bucks gave up fewer points than in any of their previous defeats, yet their own shooting left them unable to take advantage. Wednesday will test whether that defensive improvement can last against Jayson Tatum’s Celtics.

Boston must find a cleaner route through the paint

Houston held the Celtics to 38.6 percent shooting on Monday while making 54.4 percent of its own attempts, according to Boston’s game report. The Rockets won the points-in-the-paint count 50-34. Tatum scored 19 points and supplied nine assists but made five of 16 field goals. Center Neemias Queta scored 16 on six-of-seven shooting. His efficiency could not offset a broader failure to generate enough reliable looks.

On Sunday, Tatum had put up 32 in a 108-97 win at Orlando, Boston’s fifth straight victory at the time. Paul George added 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Queta made two important late blocks. George then sat out Monday’s game for rest on the second night of a back-to-back. His absence in Houston does not settle his availability against Milwaukee: the teams had not submitted their game-specific injury designations at the time of this preview.

Boston’s two most recent games point to the terms of the matchup. Tatum can create and pass from the perimeter, with Payton Pritchard able to handle the ball when the first action stalls. Milwaukee will have to choose how aggressively to close driving lanes without surrendering a quick pass to an open shooter. If the Bucks stay attached outside but lose position at the rim, Queta can profit from the space. If they force Boston to work late into the shot clock, Houston showed that the Celtics’ offence can be slowed.

The Bucks defended better in one respect and still lost

Milwaukee allowed 112 points at Minnesota, the first of its six defeats in which it did not concede at least 127, according to the NBA-hosted game recap. That was progress in a narrow sense. The Bucks shot a season-low 38.4 percent, scored 100 and watched Minnesota open the fourth quarter on an 11-3 run. Tyler Herro led Milwaukee with 21 points, Jaime Jaquez Jr. had 19, and AJ Green and Myles Turner scored 13 apiece. Rookie Brayden Burries scored nine on four-of-15 shooting in his first start.

Cleveland had beaten Milwaukee 136-111 two nights earlier. The change from 136 allowed to 112 is worth measuring, but one lower-scoring loss does not establish a repaired defence. Turner and Kel’el Ware give Milwaukee size, while Herro supplies perimeter creation and Jaquez can attack from the wing or elbow. The Bucks need those pieces to work together: a guard left to defend in transition cannot also set up a half-court possession, and a big man who steps toward Tatum leaves space behind him if the next rotation is late. No starting five for Wednesday has been confirmed.

The battle near the basket will show whether either side has learned from Monday. Houston scored 50 in the paint against Boston, but Milwaukee cannot simply assume a similar route will open. Turner and Ware must convert their chances without handing Queta repeated offensive rebounds. At the opposite end, the Celtics can move the visiting bigs with passes and cuts before the help defence sets. Free throws and turnovers may prove as influential as the headline scoring duel.

Availability remains a game-specific question

The NBA’s official injury report at 7:45 a.m. EST on Tuesday, November 3 showed “not yet submitted” for both teams’ Wednesday game. Under league rules, teams normally provide their first designation by 5 p.m. local time on the preceding day when the game is not the second night of a back-to-back. A player’s status for Monday is not automatically his status for Wednesday.

Boston Celtics

  • Paul George: sat out the Houston game for rest. His possible return has not been confirmed in the report for Milwaukee.
  • Other absences or doubts: no game-specific designation had been submitted at that cutoff. It would be wrong to infer a fully available roster.

Milwaukee Bucks

  • Absences, doubts and returns: Milwaukee had not submitted its game-specific report either. Playing on Monday is not a guarantee of participation on Wednesday.

Boston has the better record at 5-2, but the Rockets showed how an opponent can cut off its path to easy baskets. Milwaukee’s one win in seven leaves little margin for another stretch of confused rotations. The contest will reveal whether the Bucks can defend Tatum’s first action and still finish the possession with a rebound.
