Jaguars at Ravens: Baltimore must rebuild its offense on a short week

Jacksonville arrives after a 42–7 win over Indianapolis that came at a cost to its defense. Baltimore, beaten 36–10 by Buffalo, faces a more abrupt change: Lamar Jackson injured his throwing thumb, Tyler Huntley hurt his toe, and head coach Jesse Minter has named rookie Joe Fagnano his starter. Thursday’s game turns on how each side absorbs the losses in just four days.

  • Competition: 2026 NFL regular season, Week 9.
  • Matchup: Jacksonville Jaguars at Baltimore Ravens.
  • Kickoff: Thursday, November 5, 8:15 p.m. EST in Baltimore; Friday, November 6, 01:15 UTC.
  • Venue: M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore, Maryland.

The injuries have changed both sides of the ball

The Jaguars lead the AFC South at 5–2. They scored 42 against the Colts on Sunday and conceded seven, but defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton and safety Eric Murray sustained injuries that head coach Liam Coen described as season ending. Both have since been placed on injured reserve. Losing a player in the middle and another at the back of the defense is particularly significant before facing an offense with Derrick Henry in its backfield.

The Ravens are 4–4 after the loss to the Bills. Jackson hurt the right thumb on his throwing hand on Baltimore’s first offensive possession. Head coach Jesse Minter announced surgery and said Jackson would go on injured reserve, keeping him out for at least four games. Huntley was injured after replacing him. Fagnano then completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and threw an interception, according to the NFL’s game account. Baltimore is preparing for a change at quarterback that has already reached its third option.

On Tuesday the Ravens signed Kedon Slovis from Green Bay’s practice squad and brought Austin Reed back to their own practice squad. Minter then confirmed that Fagnano will start on Thursday. The rookie is dealing with an ankle issue, although he was a full participant in Tuesday’s practice. He now has a full short week to prepare rather than entering as an emergency replacement, as he did against Buffalo.

Can Henry buy time for an unfamiliar passing game?

Henry’s running could give Baltimore a way to control the tempo without putting every possession on an inexperienced passer. Minter specifically mentioned running the ball as part of the formula for supporting Fagnano. Hamilton’s absence may make the interior a more tempting target, but Jacksonville can still respond by closing lanes with its linebackers and forcing the ball outside. Without Murray at safety, the Jaguars must also keep the new quarterback from finding easy throws behind their first line of defense. Those defensive answers remain possibilities, rather than a plan announced by Coen.

Trevor Lawrence directs a Jacksonville offense that just scored 42 points. The NFL noted that four of its five offensive touchdowns against Indianapolis came from at least 25 yards away. If the Jaguars produce similarly sudden gains, Baltimore could be forced to chase the game with a quarterback who has had little time to prepare. For the Ravens, protecting the ball and avoiding a long-field deficit may matter as much as producing a spectacular play.

The preparation period makes practice reports unusually important and unusually easy to misread. Jacksonville’s Monday report followed a walkthrough and listed projected participation rather than a full practice. On Tuesday, the Jaguars said running back Bhayshul Tuten did not participate with ankle and foot trouble, while receiver Jakobi Meyers was among players limited. Neither entry alone establishes that a player will miss Thursday’s game.

Injuries and availability

The information available on Tuesday, November 3 combines club announcements and practice participation. The teams had not yet issued their final game-status designations.

Jacksonville can bring the explosive offense it showed against Indianapolis to Baltimore, but its defense must find replacements in the middle and deep field. Henry and the offensive line can ease the burden on Fagnano; the game will reveal how much the rookie can do when the Jaguars force him to throw.
