Magic at Suns: Wagner and Booker face a battle for every possession
Orlando begins a four-game road trip after turning the ball over 18 times and taking only ten free throws against Washington. Phoenix has its own repair work: it surrendered a 17-point lead in a loss at Golden State before a home game against Portland and, the following night, the Magic. Neither side has rebounded well through the opening weeks. Their lead creators will matter, but so will the possessions their teammates can save.

Orlando's thin supply of ball handlers
The Magic are 2-5 after Monday's 103-94 home loss to the Wizards. Franz Wagner scored 24 points with six assists, and Desmond Bane added 20. Orlando made 11 of 39 three-pointers, committed 18 turnovers that became 22 Washington points, and got to the free-throw line for only ten attempts. Those numbers point to a problem beyond one poor shooting night: the Magic must enter the paint, force the defense to react and finish possessions without giving the ball away.
Paolo Banchero missed the Washington game with an ankle issue, Jalen Suggs with a knee problem, Anthony Black because of ankle injury management and Noah Penda with a hamstring issue. Without Banchero, Orlando has fewer ways to create an advantage near the rim. Without Suggs and Black, Wagner and Bane carry more of the work bringing the ball up and sustaining attacks. The four absences shaped Monday's game; they do not establish who will be available in Phoenix.
NBA team statistics put Orlando at 105.7 points per game, 28th in the league, and 38.9 rebounds, last in the league, after seven games. It is an early sample, but finishing defensive possessions is already a practical concern for a team trying to give itself transition chances. Phoenix is the first stop after consecutive home defeats, with Golden State, Sacramento and Utah still ahead on this trip.
Phoenix needs more than Booker's scoring
The Suns stand at 1-4 before Wednesday's home game against Portland. Their previous outing ended in a 116-113 loss to the Warriors. Devin Booker supplied 26 points and five assists; Miles Bridges scored 21 and Dillon Brooks 18. Phoenix led by as many as 17 before Golden State worked its way back and won a tight finish. Booker's production gave the Suns an edge for stretches, but did not secure the closing possessions.
Through five games, Phoenix has averaged 112.2 points scored, 122.8 allowed and 39.6 rebounds. Those figures are dated before the Portland game and could change on Wednesday night. The Suns also face Orlando on the second night of a home back-to-back, a scheduling fact that may affect workloads without telling us in advance who will play or how many minutes.
The matchup has two clear pressure points. Orlando can challenge a defense that has conceded a high early-season total, provided it cuts the giveaways that undid its last comeback attempt. Phoenix can use Booker and the supporting scorers to attack before the Magic set their defense, but it must close out rebounds against an opponent with the same weakness. A return by Banchero or either Orlando guard would change those choices; no such return had been confirmed in the latest game-specific NBA report.

Phoenix will test whether its offense can hold up across a full game. Orlando's challenge is to create good shots without handing away the extra chances it can least afford.
