Lakers at Hawks: NBA scoring leader Luka Doncic faces a back-to-back test in Atlanta

The West-leading Lakers (8-2) visit Atlanta a day after playing in Detroit, with Luka Doncic nursing low back tightness; the Hawks get Jalen Johnson back and a full day of rest.

The Los Angeles Lakers open the week atop the Western Conference at 8-2, carried by a Luka Doncic who leads the NBA at 40.1 points per game through nine appearances. Monday asks something different of them. They play in Detroit on Sunday evening and will have barely a day to recover before facing the Hawks. Atlanta sits out Sunday and got Jalen Johnson back on Saturday after an ankle sprain. The game will show whether a Lakers attack built around one dominant creator can hold up on tired legs, and whether the Hawks can make a fatigued opponent pay.

  • Competition: NBA 2026-27 regular season.
  • Matchup: Los Angeles Lakers at Atlanta Hawks (official NBA game ID 0022600203).
  • Tip-off: Monday, Nov. 9, 7 p.m. ET; Tuesday, Nov. 10, 00:00 GMT.
  • Venue: State Farm Arena, Atlanta, Georgia.

A scoring run that puts the injury report front and center

Doncic has scored at least 37 points in each of his last seven appearances, including 52 at Utah on Oct. 25 and 53 against Portland on Friday, Nov. 6, in a 124-118 win that stretched the Lakers' winning streak to four. He is 52-for-124 from 3-point range (41.9%) and averages 7.7 assists, according to the season's box scores. Austin Reaves is the second option at 23.5 points per game and has started all 10 games.

The concern is his back. The NBA's official injury report of Saturday, Nov. 7, at 10 p.m. ET listed Doncic as questionable for Sunday's game in Detroit with low back tightness. The most recent precedent counsels caution: on Oct. 28, the second night of an earlier back-to-back, Doncic sat out at the Clippers and the Lakers won 103-87 anyway. Whether that happens again in Atlanta depends on how his back responds in Detroit and on what the team announces; nothing has been announced.

Without Doncic, the offense would run through Reaves, with more minutes for Collin Sexton and Quentin Grimes off the bench. With him, Atlanta would be facing a player who has topped 50 points twice in his nine games this season.

Kessler's workload in the paint

Walker Kessler is the other reason for the Lakers' start. He averages 14.6 points and 10.4 rebounds and has made 63 of his 88 field-goal attempts (71.6%) without attempting a 3-pointer. Saturday's report listed him as available for Detroit with a splint on a finger of his left hand.

His job grows against a Hawks team that attacks the rim relentlessly. Onyeka Okongwu, Johnson and Dyson Daniels' drives force the opposing center to step out of the lane or pick up fouls. If Kessler arrives fresh on the second night, the Lakers have a way to wall off the paint; if Sunday's minutes weigh on him, Sandro Mamukelashvili, who averages 23.2 minutes off the bench, will have to hold that front.

Johnson returns as Atlanta rides a four-game win streak

The Hawks had strung together three wins before the weekend: 108-104 at Indiana on Nov. 2, 120-105 at Washington on Nov. 4 and 139-132 over the Wizards at home on Nov. 6. On Saturday they made it four straight, beating Brooklyn 124-121 after trailing by as many as 17, to move to 7-4.

Johnson, who had missed three games with a left ankle sprain, returned with 30 points on 11-of-17 shooting, seven rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes. Atlanta scored 70 points in the paint and forced 22 Nets turnovers, the kind of interior pressure that would test Kessler. With that game, Johnson is averaging 19.8 points, 8.8 rebounds and 7.6 assists in eight appearances.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker remains the team's leading scorer at 22.1 points per game, with 43 3-pointers in 11 games. Aaron Wiggins adds 14.9 off the bench, Okongwu 13.5 with 8.0 rebounds and CJ McCollum 12.9. Daniels, the NBA's steals leader in 2024-25 and a starter in all 11 games, is the obvious candidate to make life uncomfortable for Doncic, with Luguentz Dort as an alternative.

Injury report

Atlanta's first official report for Monday's game is not due until Sunday afternoon; the Lakers, playing the second night of a back-to-back, can file theirs on Monday. The designations below are from the NBA's report of Saturday, Nov. 7, at 10 p.m. ET, covering the weekend games.

Atlanta Hawks

  • Keshon Gilbert: out — left knee inflammation; non-surgical procedure.
  • Jock Landale: out — left hip strain.
  • Asa Newell: out — left great toe hyperextension.
  • Mouhamed Gueye: out — left foot fracture.
  • Henri Veesaar: out — torn right ACL.
  • Jalen Johnson: available after a left ankle sprain.

Los Angeles Lakers

  • Luka Doncic: questionable for Sunday at Detroit — low back tightness. His status for Atlanta has not been announced.
  • Walker Kessler: available — splint on a left-hand finger.

Where the game could turn

Doncic against Daniels and Dort. Atlanta has two perimeter defenders who can take turns on the Lakers' star. If they keep him off the top of the arc and force the ball out of his hands, the Lakers will need a secondary shooter: Matisse Thybulle and Jake LaRavia have combined for 30 made 3-pointers.

The paint. Kessler against Okongwu and Johnson pits each team's main strength against the other. Offensive rebounds and the Lakers center's foul count could tip the game before shooting does.

Legs. The Lakers tip off in Detroit at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday and take the floor again 25 hours later. A wider rotation than usual would signal that the coaching staff is managing workloads; on the other bench, Wiggins gives Atlanta a scorer who can exploit that fatigue.
