Cavaliers at Hawks: Mitchell and Harden test Atlanta’s perimeter defense
Cleveland visits State Farm Arena on Thursday, a day after playing at home, while the Hawks also face games on consecutive nights. Atlanta’s ball movement and the battle for rebounds could decide a meeting between two teams still shaping their styles.

Donovan Mitchell and James Harden could face two highly regarded perimeter defenders on Thursday if Dyson Daniels and Luguentz Dort are available. Cleveland visits Atlanta in the second game of a back-to-back for both teams. Recovery is therefore a real variable; neither the starting lineups nor the game-specific injury designations had been confirmed in the official NBA report checked on Wednesday.
- Competition: NBA, 2026–27 regular season.
- Game: Cleveland Cavaliers at Atlanta Hawks.
- Venue: State Farm Arena, Atlanta, Georgia.
- Tipoff: Thursday, October 29, 8:00 p.m. EDT in Atlanta (Friday, October 30, 00:00 UTC).
Two ways to create an advantage
Cleveland entered Wednesday at 2–1. In its previous game, it beat Minnesota 127–125 after overtime. That result points to both a strength and a caution: the Cavaliers handled a close finish, but they needed five extra minutes before hosting Washington on Wednesday and then traveling to Atlanta. The accumulated workload does not establish who might rest or how many minutes any player will receive Thursday.
This is the first season for which Mitchell and Harden have had a training camp together. Harden arrived in Cleveland last February; the NBA identified their coordination, including actions involving the big men, as one of the team’s tasks. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen provide options to finish near the basket and compete on the glass. Through three games, the Cavaliers averaged 119.3 points and 47 rebounds, according to the league’s official team page. Those early figures are not a guarantee of what will happen in Atlanta.
The Hawks stood at 2–2 before hosting Miami on Wednesday. On Monday they lost 120–110 at Houston, having fallen 121–114 to the Rockets two days earlier. Jalen Johnson, a primary playmaker from the forward position, had 26 points and 16 assists in the first meeting with Houston; he scored 21 in the second. His ability to push the ball and find teammates helps explain a team figure: Atlanta led the NBA with 31.5 assists per game after four contests.
Sharing the offensive load has not removed a concern visible in the same small sample. Atlanta averaged 41.8 rebounds per game, compared with Cleveland’s 47. In Monday’s loss, Houston won the rebounding battle 52–35. Opponents do not all attack the glass the same way, but the matchup with Mobley and Allen makes the number of second chances Atlanta allows particularly relevant.
The defense Atlanta wants to bring to the perimeter
Dort’s arrival added to a perimeter group that already included Daniels. In its preseason coverage, the NBA noted that both had made the league’s All-Defensive First Team. That record makes a matchup with Mitchell and Harden a compelling possibility, but it does not confirm individual assignments: Atlanta could switch, send help or change defenders according to the possession and the final availability of its players.
For Cleveland, the question is whether its ball handlers can draw the defense toward the rim and find Mobley or Allen while staying balanced against Atlanta’s cuts and transition play. For the Hawks, Johnson will need to pair his shot creation with his teammates’ rebounding. If Cleveland limits extra possessions and makes Atlanta execute in the half court, the home side’s assist average will face a different test from its first four games. These are possible game scenarios, not plans announced by the coaches.
Player availability
In the NBA’s official 3:00 p.m. EDT injury report on Wednesday, October 28, neither team had yet submitted its report for Thursday’s game. That does not mean every player will be available. Cleveland was due to play Washington that night and Atlanta was due to play Miami; availability for the Cleveland–Atlanta game cannot be inferred from reports for those other games.

The Atlanta meeting will show how much of their offensive and defensive resources both teams can retain after playing the previous night. The answer will depend on the players ultimately available, control of the rebounds and the possessions each side can create.
