Panthers at Packers: Love's protection and Green Bay's running game face a short-week test
Both teams have only four days to respond to defeats and problems on their offensive lines. Carolina must protect Bryce Young better; Green Bay has Josh Jacobs back but awaits final word on several starters.

Green Bay hosts Carolina on Thursday with a question hanging over both offenses: which quarterback will have time to throw? The Panthers allowed five sacks and committed four turnovers against Tampa Bay. The Packers left Detroit with a defeat and injuries to two centers. A short week offers little time to rebuild protection before a meeting between teams still seeking consistency.
- Competition: NFL, 2026 regular season, Week 8.
- Matchup: Carolina Panthers at Green Bay Packers.
- Venue: Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wisconsin.
- Kickoff: Thursday, October 29, 7:15 p.m. CDT in Green Bay; 8:15 p.m. EDT on the U.S. East Coast (00:15 UTC on Friday, October 30).
Two losses, different problems
The Packers are 4–3 after a 20–17 loss to the Lions. Jordan Love completed 27 of 45 passes for 274 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Christian Watson had five catches for 57 yards; Tucker Kraft caught a touchdown pass, and Josh Jacobs, making his season debut, turned a short reception into a 25-yard score. Green Bay had a chance to take a late lead, but Trey Smack missed a 35-yard field goal and Detroit won on a Jake Bates kick.
Carolina, at 3–3, lost 43–13 to Tampa Bay. The Panthers' own review identified four turnovers and five sacks as reasons their offense fell behind early. Their defense gave up 258 rushing yards. None of those numbers guarantees Green Bay can repeat the Buccaneers' approach, but they show why protecting Bryce Young and stopping the run are immediate tests for the visitors.
Jacobs' return gives the Packers an option they lacked for the first six weeks. Against Detroit he ran for 36 yards on 11 carries and added 55 receiving yards. His rushing total was modest, though his receiving touchdown illustrated another way to involve him. Before that game, Green Bay ranked last in the league in rushing yards per game, according to Carolina's scouting report. If the Panthers again concede ground on the run, Jacobs could get more opportunities; his workload on Thursday has not been announced.
Green Bay's offensive line moves to the center of the matchup
Sean Rhyan and Jacob Monk left the Detroit game with injuries. Monk was placed on injured reserve; Matt LaFleur said Monday that he did not expect either player to be available Thursday. That is the coach's assessment, pending a final game designation for Rhyan. John Williams finished the game at center, and Green Bay promoted Mekhi Becton from its practice squad. The final line combination remains unsettled.
Love had thrown for at least 274 yards in each of his previous three games, according to the Panthers' preview. Watson and Matthew Golden provide deep targets, while Kraft can gain yards after the catch. That range of options becomes less potent if pressure forces the quarterback to decide more quickly. Golden was also listed as an estimated nonparticipant on Tuesday because of shoulder and foot issues; that entry does not yet rule him out.
Carolina has an important protection problem of its own: tackle Taylor Moton went on injured reserve Monday. Young is listed as a full estimated participant despite a knee issue, but the coaching staff must set a line that has just allowed five sacks. Getting the ball out faster or using backs and tight ends for extra help would be possible responses; no tactical choice has been announced.
Green Bay's defense is not at full strength either. Zaire Franklin was an estimated nonparticipant Tuesday with a shin injury. Carolina described Micah Parsons as not yet ready to return. Missing significant defenders could give Young openings, but that depends on who is available and whether Carolina avoids the turnovers that shaped its last game.
Carolina won its previous visit to Lambeau Field in November 2025, 16–13, on a late Ryan Fitzgerald field goal. That result does not predict Thursday: the squads and circumstances have changed. It does show that each of the teams' last six meetings was decided by single digits, according to the Panthers' review.
